  Statistics include information on employment, turnover, gross value added, net capital expenditure and other financial variables, by manufacturing, construction or service sector and local authority area. • Scottish Export Statistics Links to two sources of data on Scottish Exports:
  • The Global Connections Survey - an annual survey that provides estimates of the cash value of exports by destination and industry sector for all sectors of the Scottish economy including the primary, manufacturing and service sectors. This source should be used to obtain estimates of the cash value of exports.
  • The Index of Manufactured Exports - a quarterly analysis produced by the Scottish Government using survey data collected by the Office for National Statistics (ONS). The index provides a quarterly time series of the growth (in real terms) of export sales in the manufacturing industry. This source should be used to obtain estimates of changes in the level of export sales over time.
  • Scottish GDP website. Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is a measure of the value of goods and services produced in Scotland, before allowing for depreciation or capital consumption. Net receipts from interest, profits and dividends abroad are excluded. Quarterly data can be downloaded in Excel, PDF or HTML format.
  • Scottish Local Government Financial Statistics
    This includes data on local government income and expenditure, covering revenue and capital spending, council tax and non-domestic rates going back to 1996/97.
  • Scottish Social and Welfare Statistics
    A range of key social and welfare publications and data sources for a number of themes including: Scottish Neighbourhood Statistics; Social Justice; Households, families and individuals; Social focus; Welfare; Income; Equality.

Scottish Indices of Multiple Deprivation (Scottish Government)
The SIMD page links to the main report, maps (downloadable as PDF) and data files in Excel format. The indices were commissioned from the Social Disadvantage Research Centre, Department of Social Policy and Social Work, University of Oxford, which has also produced sets of deprivation indices for England, and Wales, and Northern Ireland. The data is based on a wide range of mainly administrative sources, to avoid reliance on decennial Census data. The indicators are based on April, 2001 data sources and the scores are reported by 1999 ward geography. There is one overall multiple deprivation score plus six scores for specific domains of deprivation: income; employment; health and disability; education, skills and training; and geographical access to services.
The Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation 2006 Summary Technical Report is also available in Adobe PDF and html format.

BERR Energy Statistics (Department for Business Enterprise & Regulatory Reform)
BERR's statistical publications on energy cover production, transformation from one type of energy into another (eg coal used for electricity generation), consumption, stocks, imports and exports, and energy prices. As well as spreadsheets containing the data presented as tables in these publications, the publications themselves are available in pdf format. Energy statistics are also available here in the form of indicators and sub-national energy statistics down to local authority level are also available here for nearly all forms of energy. EOC Research and Statistics (Equal Opportunities Commission)
The Research and statistics section contains information about EOC research, and the results of this research. It includes a wide resource of statistics about women and men to illustrate the state of sex discrimination and gender equality in Great Britain. In addition there are a wide range of downloadable EOC research reports, reading lists and a round up of published journal articles (available as PDF files).

ESDS (Economic and Social Data Service)
ESDS is a joint service co-hosted by four centres of expertise within the Universities of Essex and Manchester, comprising a number of specialist data services that aim to promote and encourage data usage in research and teaching.It provides access and support for an extensive range of key economic and social data, both quantitative and qualitative, spanning many disciplines and themes. It includes ESDS International, which provides access to a range of international macro-economic time-series datasets including IMF international Finance Statistics, OECD Main Economic Indicators, UN Statistics Division Common Database, World Development Indicators in addition to micro data sources.

Nomis UK Labour Market Data (University of Durham)
A one-stop distribution centre for up-to-date government collected labour market data run by the University of Durham under contract to National Statistics. Datasets cover employment and unemployment figures, earnings, demographics and vacancies from sources such as: Unemployment Claimant Count; Census of Employment 1971-1993; Labour Force Survey annual and quarterly data Vacancies handled by Jobcentres New Earnings Survey.

Data can be downloaded in MS Excel format, HTML or ASCII text for a range of years.

Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA)
This site contains information about the role of the agency, the Northern Ireland Census, publications and press releases, and "Online Services" including a search of surveys and statistics.

RESTATS (Renewable Energy Statistics Database for the United Kingdom)
This website summarises the results of an ongoing study for the UK Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR). The surveys carried out and methodologies used are presented in text and image form. The reported outputs of the study are in PDF format and cover topics such as regional and national generation, energy mapping and renewable energy policies. There is also a set of external links to other renewable energy websites in addition to national and regional statistics, and annual renewables statistics and energy trends.

Statistics Wales (Statistical Directorate, National Assembly of Wales)
A site set up by the devolved Welsh National Assembly. It includes specially commissioned statistical publications about Wales, Headline Statistics, subject-based Wales in Figures, StatsWales, and a topic index.

The Local Government Data Unit ~ Wales also provides access to data arranged by theme including the 2001 Census.

Tagish's Directory of UK Government Offices' Web Sites
A commercial site which acts as an access point for locating national and regional government departments and local authority web sites and related information services. Also includes a directory of information covering UK government, education and health websites, telematics and UK party political links.

UK 2005 (National Statistics)
A link to the Official Yearbook of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland which provides an overview of the UK in text, figures, tables and charts (formerly the Britain Yearbook). Afrobarometer
This research project measures the social, economic and political climate in Africa via comparative series of national public attitude surveys. These surveys are conducted on a regular basis, using a standard set of questions to allow for comparison among countries. Data from round 1 and 2 of the project is available in Excel and SPSS format for each country.

Annual macro-economic database (AMECO) (European Commission)
AMECO is the annual macro-economic database of the European Commission's Directorate General for Economic and Financial Affairs (DG ECFIN). AMECO contains data for EU-25, the euro area, EU Member States, candidate countries and other OECD countries (United States, Japan, Canada, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Mexico, Korea, Australia and New Zealand) from 1960 onwards. Data can be downloaded as Zipped text files or online (Java plug-in required). The online database has a graphical and charting facility in addition to a PDF user guide.

ASEAN Statistics (Association of South East Asian Nations, Indonesia)
ASEAN is the major body which organises political, economic and social cooperation between nations in South East Asia in order to ensure regional peace and stability. The statistics section contains links to a range of macro-economic, financial and trade statistics in a variety of formats including HTML, PDF and Excel. ASEAN Statistics also contains downloadable PDF versions of the annual Statistics of Foreign Direct Investment in ASEAN and the ASEAN statistical Yearbook in addition to links to other statistical information resources for the South East Asia region.

BBC Monitoring - Country Profiles (British Broadcasting Company)
"BBC Monitoring supplies news, information and comment gathered from the mass media around the world." BBC Monitoring is part of the BBC World Service and is funded by government departments and subscriptions. Information is collected via bureaux throughout the world. Access to country profiles is free of charge containing information with some statistical content on 190 independent states as well as several regions and territories.

Central Statistics Office of Ireland
This site contains information about the role of the CSO in the Republic of Ireland and has a principal statistics section which includes online tables on agriculture, demography, external trade, industry, key economic indicators, labour force, vital statistics as well as links to statistics from other national sources in Ireland and latest statistical releases.

Development Gateway Data and Statistics (Development Gateway Foundation, Washington D.C.)
"An interactive site for information on sustainable development and poverty reduction." This site provides links to national and international organisations that offer data, or information about data, on their web sites, including: Data profiles by country; World Bank sources; International Monetary Fund; Regional development agencies; Other international agencies; Non-government organisations; United Nations agencies. The Development Gateway also links to AiDA (Accessible Information on Development Activities) and Country Gateways - a growing network of country initiatives worldwide whose mission "is to facilitate innovative and effective use of the Internet and other information and communication technologies (ICT) in the country to reduce poverty and promote sustainable development."

ESDS (Economic and Social Data Service) International (MIMAS - University of Manchester/UK Data Archive - University of Essex)
ESDS International is run jointly by MIMAS and the UK Data Archive and provides access to, and support for, a range of international datasets including: NS Time Series DataBank; OECD, IMF (at macro level); Eurobarometer or International Social Survey Programme (ISSP) datasets (at micro level). It also a contains a resource discovery guide to freely available international data resources including: national data archives; national statistics institutions; international organisations; regional organisations; resources on methodology, standards and good practice in international data.

Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) (United Nations)
One of the five regional commissions of the United Nations (based in Chile). Provides access to economic and social statistics series (including Statistical Yearbooks), population, and transport statistics for Latin America and the Caribbean downloadable in Adobe PDF format. Also has links to analysis and research information on social aspects of development (e.g. population, labour market, poverty and the distribution of income, education, health, housing); international commerce and financial architecture; macroeconomics; economic governance; environment and development; productive and managerial development (e.g. agriculture, mining, energy, industry, services, transport, information technology) downloadable as reports in Adobe PDF format.

Energy Information Administration (EIA) (Washington, USA)
The Energy Information Administration is an independent statistical agency within the US Department of Energy and it provides comprehensive access to a range of international (and US) energy information. It provides links to reports and tables by energy type; petroleum, natural gas, coal, nuclear, electricity, renewable and alternative fuels; and also by themes such as prices, finance, consumption and international trade. There are state profiles by means of a clickable map. Annual, monthly and summary reviews are produced for most energy types and these are compounded as historical data. An Information Query System is available to provide an interactive mechanism for customising reports from the EIA databases. Data is available in a number of formats (HTML, XLS, PDF) dependent upon source and type.

European Telework Online
A range of statistics relating to information technology in EU and other selected countries. Topics include: telecommunication and penetration; relative prices of telecommunications; economic indicators; employment indicators; information and communications markets and trends.

Eurostat (Statistical Office of the European Communities)
Charged with gathering and harmonising statistical data from the National Statistical Institutes of each of the 25 member states of the European Union (as of October 1 2004). The data is then disseminated, to the European Commission and other EU institutions, as well as to the public, via a network of European Data Shops. In the UK, the Office of National Statistics (Tel. 020 7533 5888) acts as a Eurostat data shops and distributor of paper publications. Users have to register to gain access to the range of data which includes Key Structural, short-term, and long-term indicators; a thematic database (with such themes as economics and finance; population and social conditions; industry, trade and services; agriculture, forestry and fisheries; external trade; transport etc); Euro Yield Curves and a Data Explorer. The website also offers news releases, downloadable pocketbooks, working papers and studies in addition to The Eurostat Yearbook 2008 downloadable in Adobe PDF format (requires registration). Previous editions (2003-2007) are also available.

Global Poverty Monitoring (World Bank)
Drawing on 265 national sample surveys (e.g. Household Survey data) spanning 83 countries this web site provides access to estimates of various poverty and inequality measures made by the World Bank Research Group . No pre-existing estimates from other compilations or country studies have been used and the figures provided by region and country in HTML format are accompanied by downloadable methodology (in PDF format), software (POVCAL - a program for calculating poverty measures) and other documentation.

Globalization Index 2007 (Foreign Policy Magazine, Washington D.C.)
Downloadable Excel files that measure a country's (62 advanced economies and key emerging markets) global links from foreign direct investment to international travel, telephone traffic and internet servers. In addition to links to previous Globalization indices, there's an index FAQ and methodology link detailing how the index is calculated.

Groningen Growth and Development Centre (GGDC) (Groningen University, Netherlands)
The GGDC data series presenting measures of economic performance are as follows:

• Total Economy Database which contains annually updated series on real GDP, population, employment and working hours for 125 countries from 1950 onwards. Formerly developed and maintained by the GGDC, this database is now hosted by The Conference Board.
• GGDC 10-Sector Database includes series on output in current and constant prices, and employment by major sectors of the economy for 22 countries. The series was last updated in 2007..
• GGDC 60-Industry Database which contains data on value added at constant and current prices, and persons employed for up to 60 industries covering the economy of the 26 OECD countries and Taiwan from 1990-2003. Previous versions are also available.

Human Development Indicators (United Nations Development Programme)
Presentation of statistical tables and country rankings from the 2007/2008 Human Development Report, and going back to 1990. Some tables are in PDF format, others in HTML.

The ICOP Industry Database which provides estimates of comparative productivity levels by industry covering 30 countries. Annual series from 1959-2000 for manufacturing are provided. Estimates for retail and wholesale trade, transport and communication are available from the International Labour Office (ILO) publication Key Indicators of the Labour Market. Data can be downloaded as Excel files.

Index of Economic Freedom (Freedom House)
A measure of 162 countries against a list of 50 independent variables divided into 10 broad factors of economic freedom (the higher the score on a factor, the greater the level of government interference in the economy and the less economic freedom the country enjoys). In addition to 2008 survey charts and tables in Adobe PDF format there are links to a Map of Freedom 2008, a Map of Press Freedom 2008 and Freedom in the World Comparative Rankings (1973-present) in Excel format.

International Energy Agency (IEA) Statistics
Statistics, graphs and data on world energy consumption, reserves and the international energy outlook. Data can be searched by type of fuel, country and region. The results to surveys conducted by the IEA area available for download as PDF files.

International Monetary Fund (IMF) Data and Statistics
The IMF publishes a range of time series data on IMF lending, exchange rates and other economic and financial indicators. International Labour Organisation (ILO) Statistics Bureau
Main page for ILO data and statistics. Contains a description of the statistics available and links to LABORSTA, the online database for the ILO. Documents can be downloaded in CSV format. Yearly data which covers information on Total and Economically active population, Employment, Unemployment, Hours of Work, Wages, Labour Cost, Consumer Price Indices, Occupational Injuries, Strikes and Lockouts: 1969-2006 is available. There is a list of all statistical databases available from the ILO in addition to Labour migration statistics.

Internet World Stats
This site is based in the USA and contains statistics for Internet usage worldwide. It contains Internet statistics, broadband penetration, world population data and global trade information. The website is updated frequently. The site is easy to navigate, with links to world regions, countries, and pages on top ten countries with higher numbers of Internet users, top Internet languages, the Internet divide and broadband usage. Some market reports are only available for a fee, but there is much good free information.

Intute Social Sciences - Statistics and Data
A gateway to evaluated statistical data from a variety of internet sources, organised by sub-categories (e.g. Finance and Markets; Health and Nutrition; Land and the Environment; Population and Area Statistics; Social Attitudes and Behaviour; statistical theory) and by type of resource (including bibliographic, corporate, data, government, educational and others).
Includes Intute: EuroStudies which is a gateway to online resources including statistical agencies, data archives, etc. for each nation. Nations are indexed by region and linked to listings of official data pages and national information.

ITU Information and Communication Technology Indicators (International Telecommunications Union)
Online access to ITU Telecommunication Indicator Reports and statistics analysing trends and developments in the global telecommunications sector. Online statistics include: basic indicators; main telephone lines, subscribers per 100 people; mobile cellular, subscribers per 100 people; internet indicators, hosts, users and numbers of PCs; top 20 public telecom operators/ mobile cellular operators/ fixed telephone line operators/telecom equipment vendors/online service providers; telecommunication indicators in the Eurostat Area. Joint External Debt Hub (JEDH)
Statistical tables are provided that bring together data that are currently compiled and published separately by the contributing international agencies on components of countries' external debt and international reserve assets. The tables are updated quarterly and presented in HTML or PDF. Free access is also provided to an online database which provides longer time series and permits manipulation of the figures.

Medstat (European Union)
Medstat is a regional statistical programme of co-operation between the European Union and various Mediterranean countries - currently Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestine, Syria, Tunisia and Turkey. Statistics are divided into themes, such as General and Regional Statistics, Economy and Finance, Population and Social Conditions. Some summary data are available in tables in PDF. More in-depth statistics can be obtained from the European Reference Databases. Medstat is a subsidiary service of Eurostat, the official statistics service of the European Union.

NBER: Online Economic Data (National Bureau of Economic Research, USA)
The Penn World Tables (country-level comparative indicators, 1950-2002) are here, along with the NBER Macrohistory database, Industry data and other time series, and special topic datasets, mostly focusing on the United States.

OECD Development Assistance Committee (DAC) Database on Aid Activities
Jointly sponsored by the OECD and the World Bank, this system covers the activities of most of the 23 members of the OECD's Development Assistance Committee (DAC) as well as those of multilateral development banks and some UN agencies. The CRS (Creditor Reporting System) records over 60, 000 new grant and loan commitments a year and is updated on a regular basis.

Statistical Yearbook of the League of Nations (Northwestern University, US)
The League of Nations was an international organization founded as a result of the Paris Peace Conference, 1919. The League's goals included disarmament, preventing war through collective security, settling disputes between countries through negotiation diplomacy and improving global welfare. The United Nations Organization replaced it after the end of World War II and inherited a number of agencies and organizations founded by the League. In addition to containing the Statistical Yearbook of the League of Nations, Northwestern University Library's digital collection focus on the founding of the League and the League's work toward international disarmament. UNICEF Socio-Economic Indicators Database
The TransMONEE database is a public-use database of socio-economic indicators for Central and Eastern Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CEE/CIS/Baltics). The database allows the rapid retrieval and manipulation of economic and social indicators for 28 transition countries in the region. The full database is downloadable as an Excel spreadsheet.

UNICEF Statistical Tables (United Nations Children's Fund)

The UNU/WIDER (United Nations University/World Institute for Development Economics Research) - UNDP (United Nations Development Programme) World Income Inequality Database (WIID) collects and stores information on income inequality in developed, developing, and transition countries. World Bank research has compiled a large number of datasets from official statistical systems organized and financed by national governments. Free sources of data can be retrieved by searching for research topics such as Domestic Finance; Governance; International Economics; Private/Public Sector Development; Transitional Economies.

Datasets include: World Governance and Anti-Coruption Indicators 1996-2007, World Business Environment Survey 2000 (WBES); Transition Economies Enterprise Survey (BEEPS, 1999/2000 and 2002); World Development Report Business Survey 1997; Unofficial Economy Datasets; Economic Growth Research Datasets etc. Data can also be searched for by country (including Education; Gender; Health, Nutrition, and Population Statistics; ICT at a Glance tables) or by general topic.

World Trade Organization Resources (World Trade Organization)
These WTO pages provides access to a range of resources including statistics, research and publications. Statistical resources include: Trade Profiles; Tariff Profiles; Time Series in Merchandise and Commercial Services Trade; International Trade Statistics (from 1998). Economic research and analysis materials include annual publications and research reports on specific topics. Resources are available in MS-Excel, HTML and PDF.
