Data Archive (University
of Essex)
Funded by the ESRC and JISC, the Data Archive has been the national archive
for social science and large-scale government datasets since 1967.
Access for academic use is free, but
registration is required.

Home Office Research Development Statistics
The Research, Development and Statistics Directorate (RDS)
provide a variety of information and maintain the
various statistical services published by the Home Office. Numerous
datasets and statistics are available to download via the subjects
link including: Home Office Statistical Bulletins (including British
Crime Surveys), Offenders Index
Database, Patterns of Crime, Juvenile Offending, Prison Statistics,
Immigration and Asylum Statistics.
MORI Recent Polls
A market and opinion research organisation, MORI
displays summaries and poll results of UK fieldwork
commissioned by various commercial and non-commercial
organisation's, grouped by year. Attitudes about political events and
social situations featured, including very recent surveys.

Eurobarometer Data Service Guide (Zentralarchiv, Cologne)
The Eurobarometer survey series monitors attitudes toward the European
Union amongst member states, as well as other social topics. This site
provides codebook searches and other information. UK academic users should
order datasets through the
Data Archive.

European Social Survey (Centre for Comparative Social Surveys,
City University, UK)
The European Social Survey (the ESS) is an academically-driven social survey designed to chart and explain the interaction between Europe's changing institutions and the attitudes, beliefs and behaviour patterns of its diverse populations. The survey, now in its fourth round, covers over 30 nations. It is funded via the European Commission's 5th and 6th Framework Programme, with supplementary funds from the European Science Foundation. The project is directed by a Central Co-ordinating Team led by Roger Jowell at the Centre for Comparative Social Surveys at the City University.
Data from most countries participating in Round 1-3 is available however users have to register to gain access to the data.
National Archive
of Criminal Justice Data (NACJD) (Bureau of Justice Statistics,
USA)
Housed at ICPSR at the University of Michigan, this public
repository makes available hundreds of datasets, mainly U.S.-based
for free downloading.
Examples of subject categories are Community Studies, Crime and
Delinquency, Police, and
Victimatization studies.

Nations Surveys of Crime Trends and Operations of Criminal Justice
Systems
Provides data from all six surveys (1970-1997) in the series.
Some of the files are zip
compressed, and users have a choice of ASCII, Lotus 123
(spreadsheet), or SPSS formats. Some
topical tables are viewable online.
TPDRC (Terrorism and Preparedness Data Resource Center, Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research, USA)
The TPDRC is housed at ICPSR at the University of Michigan. It archives and distributes data collected by government agencies, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and researchers about the nature of intra- (domestic) and international terrorism incidents, organizations, perpetrators, and victims; governmental and nongovernmental responses to terror; and citizen's attitudes towards terrorism, terror incidents, and the response to terror. It also organizes and streamlines access to extant research and administrative data from across the world that are relevant to the study of terrorism. Included in the resource center are Surveys in the Terrorism and Preparedness Survey Archive (TaPSA) -
a part of the TPDRC, which archives national and international survey data and related research materials about terrorism, homeland security, and preparedness. Other resources include publications and announcements.
Transparency International Surveys and Indices (Transparency International, Berlin, Germany)
Transparency International (TI) is an "international non-governmental organisation devoted to combating corruption". In addition to containing links to Tools and Initiatives, and Research resources (such as the Corruption Online Research and Information System (CORIS), TI Source Book etc) this site also provides links to Surveys and Indices including: Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) which ranks countries in terms of experts' perception of corruption; Bribe Payers Index - the propensity of firms from industrialised countries to bribe abroad: Global Corruption Barometer Survey. Results, press releases and reports are available in a combination of HTML and Adobe PDF.
World Values Survey (World Values Survey Association)
The World Values Survey (WVS) is a worldwide investigation of sociocultural and political change and explores the hypothesis that mass belief systems are changing in ways that have important economic, political, and social consequences. The project is guided by a steering committee representing all regions of the world, coordination and distribution of data being based at the Institute for Social Research of the University of Michigan, under the direction of Ronald Inglehart. The WVS builds on the European Values Surveys (EVS) and a total of four waves have been carried out since 1981 allowing comparative analysis.
NOTE: Edinburgh University Users can gain access to both WVS and EVS from the UK Data Archive.
